Chỉ thói đa thê và quan niệm coi việc lấy thêm vợ lẽ là bình thường khi vợ cả còn sống, còn khi vợ mất thì lấy vợ khác thay thế. Thường dùng để nói về tập tục hôn nhân phong kiến và thái độ trọng nam khinh nữ trong xã hội cũ.
