xoè
xoè is a Vietnamese verb for something opening outward from a compact shape into a wider one: a hand spreading open, a paper fan unfolding, wings extending, or a peacock tail fanning out beautifully. But when should you say xoè ra, xoè cánh, or even the gentler-sounding xoè xoè? This lesson looks at the visual feel of the word, how it differs from close ideas like mở ra and trải ra, and why it can also appear in a fierce idiom with fangs and claws. Watch the full lesson to see xoè in natural Vietnamese use.
