dê
dê first means “goat” in Vietnamese, especially in the common form con dê, and it appears naturally in words like goat milk, billy goat, nanny goat, young goat, and goat pen. But this small word does much more than name an animal. In everyday speech, dê can also shift into slang: a harsh label for a lecherous man, or a colloquial verb meaning to flirt with or hit on someone, often in an obvious or unwelcome way. There is even a regional agricultural use in dê thóc, “to winnow rice.” Learn how context changes everything, and watch the full lesson to hear the key patterns in action.
