teo
teo is a Vietnamese word with a vivid core: something becomes smaller, weaker, shriveled, or wasted away. It can describe fruit drying out after being left in the air, or muscles gradually atrophying when they are not used. But teo is also useful beyond physical shrinking. In colloquial Vietnamese, it can intensify an adjective-like idea, giving a sense of “completely” or “utterly,” often with a negative tone, as in a room that feels completely deserted or a heart that feels utterly sad. The lesson also touches on related phrases like teo tóp, teo đi, teo cơ, and teo gan. Watch the full lesson to learn how context points you to the right meaning.
